As the 97’s celebrate the 15th anniversary of the release of Too Far To Care, Rhett decided to share some stories and insights by going track-by-track of the album’s thirteen songs. He is addressing them in reverse order, finishing appropriately with “Timebomb.” Here are some of my memories of the songs and videos I have taken at various shows I've been to over the past few years.
Four Leaf Clover: Starting with my
favorite performance of Four Leaf Clover. A once in a lifetime, memorable
night! (Well, I guess not once in a lifetime… If I would have made the trip to
California again, I could have seen Exene 2 more times. Dang it!)
House That Used To Be: this is one of my
all-time favorite songs... I know, I know... I say that about all of the
songs... This one really is... This video was taken in July 2010 and it was
night 3 of a 3 night tour with my friend Christi, we went to three shows, in
three different states... Soooo much fun, but SOOOOO tiring...
Niteclub: This video was from an awesome
night. Awesome for 2 reasons; I met two of the coolest people I know: Rhett and
one of my best friends in the world, Callie.
Curtain Calls: At The release show for TGTV1 – Rhett Miller was so awesome to play this request for my friend’s daughter, Grace. Curtain Calls is one of her favorite songs. She has great taste.
Just Like California: I've only heard live once. I was in CA with Callie on a trip to see the guys in LA and San Francisco & I was too busy singing along to this rarely played tune to video. Here is one I recorded on 8/24 in Dallas on night two of the TFTC tour.
Big Brown Eyes: Always a fun sing-along. Video is from my trip with Callie Woolam to CA. You can hear us singing along about Robert's dad.. Good times. I want to go back to California so bad, unfortunately not this tour.
Streets of Where I’m From: Just like many Old 97's songs, I was in an unhappy relationship for many years. The first show after I left was the 97's in my hometown. It had been at least 13 years since I had seen them. I fell in love with the band all over again when they performed "Streets of Where I'm From."
Melt Show: Another song I've only heard a few times out of 100+ times I've seen Old 97's, Melt Show. This is my video from night two of the TFTC tour in Dallas.
W. TX Teardrops: To the other end of the spectrum, W. TX Teardrops is on almost every set list. This is a song that I LOVE to sing along with, so for the best interest of your hearing, I have never uploaded my videos of this song until now; this is my video from night two of the TFTC tour in Dallas.
Salome: Salome is such a beautiful song. I am always a sucker for the ballads. Like I have said before, I have seen the 97's over 100 times now... Out of all of those times, I had never seen Rhett wear one of my favorite shirts UNTIL this night. Yes, I know... Lame. I have a favorite shirt that Rhett wears, but this shirt, combined with his eyes.. DREAMY!!
Broadway: Speaking of a song that is rarely heard... Broadway... IN FACT, looking on YouTube, there are NO videos on the 97’s singing Broadway. Until now… Here is my video from night two of the TFTC tour in Dallas.
Barrier Reef: One of the best stages I've seen Old 97's perform on was in Carrolton, TX. This was also a special night in October 2010. The Texas Rangers clinched the ALCS while the guys were on stage. We let them know the Rangers won by giving them all the “Antlers up” sign.
Timebomb: Timebomb is a song I love, but hate to hear. As all of you 97's fans know, it means the show is over. BOOOO! I also find it fitting that I wrap up the #TFTC posts with a video of the guys in my home state of Oklahoma at the legendary, Cain's Ballroom. Please come back to OK soon.
